Implementing Process Frameworks Like Lean UX in Your Organization

Last week we kicked off our 2015 NoVA UX meetup calendar at AddThis HQ with a visit from author and Lean UX specialist Jeff Gothelf. On the evening before his full-day DC Lean UX workshop, Jeff shared a talk titled, “Purity vs Pragmatism,” in which he passed along his experience with helping organizations implement frameworks such as Agile development and Lean UX.

Jeff explained how easy it is for organizations to become overwhelmed trying to implement a particular framework wholesale without thinking about that company’s particular context. Factors such as culture, distributed teams, opinionated executives, skepticism and cost can all affect how easy or difficult a team may find trying a new technique.

He suggested four strategies to get started changing how your team works:

  1. Appreciate what already works and where things can be better
  2. Educate yourself and your company about the particular framework or process that you’d like to implement
  3. Iterate; measure and recognize what works (or doesn’t!)
  4. Propagate: share what you’ve learned with your team and the larger organization

NoVA UX is a monthly meetup group for those interested in user experience who work in the Northern Virginia and DC metro areas. Our next event is February 18th where our friend John Whalen returns to talk about Emergent UX.
